The Angryman Moment.
Ai: what was the illustrative purpose of Rush Limbaugh's caller abortions in 1989? And, describe the schtic.
The SchtickThe gag was a recurring on-air stunt used when a caller disagreed with Limbaugh or began presenting an argument he did not like. Instead of engaging in a standard debate or a polite sign-off, Limbaugh would abruptly cut off the caller using a barrage of sound effects—specifically the loud whirring of a vacuum cleaner paired with an agonizing scream.
After triggering the sound effects and disconnecting the line, Limbaugh would mockingly announce that the caller had been "aborted." He would then deadpan and deny that he had "hung up" on the caller, playing on a promise he frequently made to his audience never to hang up on anyone.
To Highlight the Reality of Abortion: Limbaugh claimed the graphic and jarring nature of the gag (the vacuum sound and the scream) was meant to illustrate "the tragedy of abortion" by forcing listeners to confront the visceral finality of terminating a life.
To Provoke a Moral Debate: He argued that the shock value was a form of political satire meant to force a public conversation on whether abortion constitutes murder. By ending a person's ability to speak on his program mid-sentence, he sought to create an analogy for ending a developing life before it has a chance to speak or exist in the world.
To Mock Pro-Choice Arguments: The bit was designed to use what he called "the illustration of the absurd with absurdity." By terminating callers instantly and dismissively, he aimed to parody what he viewed as the left's casual or systemic treatment of abortion rights.
Now while Ai, after several repeats of my queries, only coughed this up. Remember this was pre-social media (1989) and Rush was Syndicated by ABC radio through WABC New York. At that time, this was even before Fox News and Right After Reagans repeal of the Fairness Doctrine (not fair at all it gave PBS/NPR and the three broadcast Networks ABC, NBC and CBS a legal monopoly over news and broadcast entertainment). THERE WERE ONLY in Radio ABC, NBC and CBS and the outlier USA radio networks in main broadcast and TBN/FAMILY LIFE RADIO as the ONLY Religious alternative.
Rush had to still watch what he said. He could NOT disclose what he was really trying to say which is the following;
"Good morning Dittoheads, This is the EIB network, the Rush Limbaugh Show. Maha Rushie here with talent on loan from God and half my brain tied behind my back just to make it fair.
(RUSTLES PAPERS)
Here on my stack of stuff I have a copy of a letter from a Mizzzzzz Margaret Sanger to a Clarence J Gamble dated December 1939. I wanted to share a few points from this letter if I may. Mr Snerdly, If you'll be so kind, clip 30 please.
Quote:
I have been in North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas. That while the colored Negros have great respect for White doctors they can get closer to their own members and more or less lay thier cards on the table; which means thier ignorance, superstitions and doubts. They do not do this with the white people and if we can train the Negro doctor at the clinic he can go among them with enthusiasm and with knowledge which, I believe, will have far reaching results among the colored people. His work in my opinion should be entirely with the Negro population and the nurse, hospital, social workers as well as the county's white doctors. His success will depend upon his personality and his training by us.
The minister's work is also important and also he should be trained; perhaps by the Federation as to our ideals and the goal we hope to reach. We do not want the word to go out that we want to exterminate the Negro population and the minister is the man who can straighten out that idea if it ever occurs to any of their more rebellious members.-
End Quote.
Ladies and gentlemen what I'm holding in my formerly nicotien stained fingers, what I just read to you is from that letter is by the founder of Planned Parenthood, the patrón saint of abortion Margaret Sanger about black people......"
If it were today, not 1989, when Rush started pushing this discussion on abortion and he was on Rumble or YouTube on social media...this would be how far he would have taken the discussion instead of self censoring on network radio of 1989.
Rush was a REPUBLICAN raised in rural Missouri on the banks of the Mississippi in the Jim Crow era. There are strong rumora that his father, REPUBLICAN lawyer and later REPUBLICAN judge in Rural Southeast Missouri just a short northwest of Memphis was a man after which Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" was modeled around.
Rush grew up in that, his family FOUGHT Jim Crow...HE FOUGHT IT AS A YOUNG MAN...white guy sure...but I believe in his heart part of his passion was to set EVERY American free.
I believe when he did the caller abortion schtic in what had to have known about that letter..he envisioned babies sure....double sure black babies violently sucked away from mother's womb before they even had a chance.
If you pull out a map, its not too far up Interstate 55 from West Memphis, Arkansas to Rush's hometown in Missouri.
Thats why YOU Angryman feel a kindred spirit to him. Thats why YOU carry his torch beyond the limits he had in his day.
